I make robust and usable stoneware and porcelain informed by the values of the Chinese and Japanese traditions. These marry an inventive approach to form and glazing: an informal sensibility which welcomes a degree of spontaneity in glazing, with strong refined but expressive forms, and a robust finish.
My work is also influenced by my activity as a painter and sculptor, which I have been fully engaged in since 2009. I started throwing more recently in 2014. Pottery allows some of the quite complex concerns that are explored in those works to be expressed simply and directly in objects that are more easily affordable, and a pleasure to use and see around the home.
Working with clay, particularly on the wheel, is an exciting and direct experience of creation. I do not work to repeat myself, but try to make each piece its own, in shape and glazing. I am happy when that excitement and expressive particularity is clear in the finished piece.
